REVIEW: Rocketman (2019)
Rocketman’, the 2019 Musical Drama based on iconic glam-rock star Elton John, shows us the ups and downs of being in the limelight as a performer. We also see how the singer has many flaws, interfering with his unbelievable talent for song writing and performing on more than one occasion. Taron Egerton, the Welsh actor portraying Elton John, outshone everyone in this film with his outstanding emotional performance.
To capture such a unique character in the way he did is the work of a truly amazing actor. Richard Madden, Bryce Dallas-Howard and Stephen Graham are other notable members of the cast, playing those closest to Elton and bringing the story smoothly together.
Directed by Dexter Fletcher, the film has often been compared to the likes of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, however the two are very different. Unlike the 2019 biopic telling the dramatic story of rock sensation ‘Queen’, ‘Rocketman’ uses a more creative method of storytelling. CGI, on-screen graphics and unrealistic scenarios are all featured within the movie, creating a more enhanced and engaging experience for audiences.
Once you get your head around how ‘Rocketman’ is more like a musical rather than a biopic, it is easier to enjoy. This differed greatly from ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, where each musical performance took place on a stage or in a recording studio.
Similarly to 'Mama Mia', the storyline is supported by songs helping the characters express how they feel about certain situations. The music used in ‘Rocketman’ is all Elton John’s, including some of his biggest hits, ‘Tiny Dancer’, ‘Your Song’ and best of all, ‘Rocketman’.
To help aid the release of the film, an album with 23 featured songs was made available on streaming services such as Apple Music and Spotify.
All things considered, ‘Rocketman’ is a must-see film that teaches audiences about the genius work of Elton John, mixed with his fallen ways and how 'he's still standing' after everything he's been through.
